All of us from time to time receive digital archive packages, whether they are downloaded online or get sent over by our friends. Occasionally, we might be even packaging and distributing archives ourselves. But few of us stop and think why exactly do we do this.

ZIP and RAR files are used to archive and transfer data. They usually contain one or more files or folders that have been compressed to a smaller size. You often encounter ZIP or RAR files when downloading from the internet.

To open ZIP, RAR, and 7Z files on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you need to download third-party software. There are lots of archive extraction apps available, but I only found two that allow you to open all three file formats:

Documents is currently in its sixth version. As well as allowing you to open and manage a range of file formats, it also includes a built-in web browser with its own download manager. This makes it easy to manage your archive file downloads from the web.

When the testing period is over, you'll no longer be able to open the beta build. To install the App Store version of the app, download or purchase the app from the App Store. In-app purchases are free only during beta testing, and any in-app purchases made during testing will not carry over to App Store versions.

Note: To automatically download additional in-app content and assets in the background once a beta app is installed in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or macOS 13, turn on Additional In-App Content in your App Store settings for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

A RAR file is a data container that stores oneor more compressed files. People and companies use RAR files to compress theirfiles so they will be smaller. This way, instead of downloading several filesindividually, you can download them all at once.

WinZip is safe to download and install onto your OS. A notification may appear when you launch the application for the first time on your Mac. The notice will let you know that the app was downloaded from the internet. The announcement may appear often with newly installed apps. If you want to disable the warning message, then you can in system preferences.

You can use WinZip to pack and unpack files and folders. You are compressing files together when you pack. WinZip lets you save storage space on your Mac OS. You can reduce file sizes and increase download and upload speeds. File compression lets you easily email large files to overcome attachment restrictions. You and the recipient will benefit from WinZip.

Most files that you download from the Internet usually come in an archived format and have one of the formats used for archived and compressed files. Opening these ZIP, RAR, TAR, and BIN files on a Mac may seem impossible on the first try as your machine is just not compatible with these formats by default.

With ZIP Extractor, you can selectively use a limited number of archived files. This is really helpful if you want to download and transfer the executable of a software without downloading all individual bits.

While a tool like ExtendsClass is good for an occasional download, it gets time-consuming if your compressed folder contains too many unzipped files. It woul be better to use the previous instructions in such a case.

Every time I download a zip or a rar file it asks me what to do with the file and doesn't give me the option to do this automatically next time, like it did way back before I made the mistake of refreshing firefox. It's driving me nuts to have to click save file every time without being given the option to do this automatically next time. It gives me the option to do this automatically next time when I download an mp3 file, but not zip or rar files. Help please.

Hi VitriolVic, the site from which you are downloading the files might not be sending a specific content type but instead a generic "binary download" content type. In that case, Firefox normally won't let you permanently associate the generic content type with a particular program. This may be difficult to diagnose from the Open/Save/Cancel dialog, but usually can be confirmed using the Network Monitor section of the developer tools.

Before going there, you may want to try the following: copy an old settings file from your "pre-Refresh" profile to your "post-Refresh" profile. The file is mimeTypes.rdf, and it stores the preferred download actions you had previously accumulated. I'm not sure how long ago "way back" was but if it wasn't that long, this might be a shortcut.

Unfortunately, I no longer have my old profile folder anymore. I threw it out as soon as I finished setting up all my add-ons, thinking I would get the option to "do this automatically next time", like I did with Mp3 files. So, I tried to replace the mimeTypes.rdf file from an old time machine back up & it didn't help either. It's strange because it did recognize an RAR file the other day from a site I always download from, but when I refreshed again, now it no longer recognizes it. It's very frustrating for a control freak like me to have to be questioned every time what to do with a file that it used to know exactly what to do with it. I'm not very computer savvy at all, but I did what you have stated from my old back up and it didn't work at all. I was wondering if there's any way to manually add content type to the applications panel list because it's not adding any of these ZIP or RAR files anymore? Like I said before, it did add the RAR file to the list upon my first refresh, but when I refreshed it again because it wouldn't add the ZIP files, now it won't add the RAR files either. If I download an older version of Firefox, might it recognize the ZIP and RAR files like it used to ? I wish I never refreshed it at all at this point because it solved my initial problem but now caused me more problems that affects me on a daily basis and may not be such a huge problem, but it is more of a time consuming inconvenience.

Thanks so much. Your ZIP file gave me the option to do this again automatically next time. Hopefully that will transfer over to any other ZIP files I download in the future. You're the best, thanks again for your time and help. :)

Click here to download the Company Portal for Windows. This application can be used to download and install software like eduroam wireless, Microsoft Office, and Matlab onto your Windows laptop or desktop.

Apple actually has an example application called ZipBrowser on their developer site. The direct download is located here. Unfortunately this only works with zip files. The actually app is only 600K so it's nice and small. (Note that ZipBrowser only works on 10.6+)

Similar to the Finder it has a sidebar on the left side into which you can drop your favorite folders for archives, e.g., your downloads folder. The main file list in the center shows the contents of the archive and on the right side is a sidebar which can display a preview of the selected file.

A Roshal Archive or RAR file is a common type of file archive that your small business may encounter when someone shares data with you or when you download files from a website. Proprietary to the WinRAR application, this format allows for smaller file sizes due to compression, the use of multiple split archives and support for security features such as encryption. These features make the archive format popular for sending sensitive documents as well as large files. If you don't want to pay for WinRAR or can't install the app on your system, you have several free alternatives for opening RAR files on Mac, Linux or Windows, but you'll need the official WinRAR app to create any RAR archives.

If you use macOS on your work computer, download The Unarchiver free app from the Mac App Store. This app can open encrypted RAR files as well as those that span more than one volume. It also won't throw an error if the RAR file's name has foreign characters in it like other apps might.

Drag and drop the RAR file from your computer to the file area on the website. Respond with the archive's password if it has one, and the site extracts the RAR file. You can choose to download the files one at a time or download them all as a ZIP file that Windows, Linux and macOS support natively. 2ff7e9595c
